Cold Day in The Valley

Finally Ottawa is getting the cold winter weather for which she is known (and IMHO, is loved).

5th leg! A Wonder of Nature Walks the Paddock at Bowmanville

Ah yes, so I haven't learned how to link to a photo with Flockr, but I have learned how to blog from Flickr...

Flock Fotos

Today I explored Flock's Foto Pheatures and again, I'm thrilled. With the click of a button I can view any number of photostreams on Flickr or Photobucket. One of my favourites so far is an outstanding photo of a remarkable bovine in Bowmanville, Ontario. That's right, he has five, count 'em, five legs.

The First Observation From My Commute: Big Pile o' Trash

As I write this blog, each day I will try and notice a new thing about my commute and use this as content to share. This early in my blogging career I have plenty of material to work with, but for some reason the most important thing to blog about today is the pile of garbage I have observed recently beside my most commonly used off-ramp.

A large pile of garbage has sprung up at the corner of Parkdale Avenue and the Eastbound Queensway off-ramp. I noticed it last week. At first, I suspected (with some annoyance) that one of the panhandlers that work the stopped traffic at the bottom of this offramp must be responsible for this unsightly mess.

Then I realized, much to my guilt, that they likely were responsible-someone has taken considerable efforts to clear the grass and bushes alongside the offramp of rubbish, and then place it in a pile. Outstanding work!

Dear reader, I make you this commitment: I will attempt to identify the panhandler responsible and voice my appreciation, and I will go by at some point with a garbage bag and shovel to finish the job.

Unless of course it is covered by a snowbank by that time, in which case the garbage will need to hibernate until spring.

If I knew how to add a polling capability to my blog, I would add that now and ask: Should I go pick up the garbage from under the snow? Wait till spring? Call the city?

I think I've discovered my next blog learning goal: polling. Oh wait, in blogging lingo, the more appropriate term must be "blearning."

Commuting and Blogging

Today I mentioned to the colleague I often carpool with that I have started a blog. Her first comment? "You won't write about my car will you?" And so, of course, I must.

Just yesterday, I was commenting on how clean her car was. Especially for a car of such an advanced age and modest, corrosion-accented green exterior.

I think people are too hard on their own cars.

Blogging 101: Trying Out Flock

As part of my new exploration of the blogging world, I'm trying out the relatively new web browser called 'Flock.' Developed by a company of the same name, Flock has been described on Techcrunch as a "social networking browser." With its hooks into online photo sharing sites like Flickr, its integrated blogging feature (which I'm using right now) and its built in news reader, this derivative of the Mozilla Firefox browser is interesting and Web 2.0-y to be sure.

I'll write more about Flock and its capabilities once I've figured it out, but given that I have learned to update my new blog with Flock in about 5 minutes (including two separate attempts to connect), I'm looking forward to playing with Flock a little more.

One beef so far: I love spell checking my blog post before publishing it, and Flock's spell checker is quite handy. Not to dwell in minutae, but one funny flaw I discovered in Flock's spell checker is that it doesn't actually seem to know the word 'blog' or blog A little ironic, but not surprising--I'm not certain how often the world's spell checking software is updated.
